New H2O Centre in Kenya
Boards Magazine article, 2004
'H2O Extreme Watersports, East Africa’s first dedicated windsurfing and kitesurfing centre, opened in Christmas 2003 at Diani Beach on Kenya’s south coast. From the description it sounds like Kenya is one of windsurfing’s best-kept secrets. We’ve all heard the “warm water, constant side shore trade winds, flat water in the lagoon and down-the-line wavering on the reef” story before, but combine this with Africa’s best game parks, a beautiful coastline, and a wealth of alternative activities (from climbing Kilimanjaro to scuba diving) and you’ve got an unbeatable holiday destination. And, with no sharks and flight times just over 7 hours from London, Kenya has a distinct advantage over other far-flung destinations such as South Africa.
Although the location offers conditions for all levels, for the wave sailors the reef picks up fun-sized swell year-round, reaching logo to mast-high on big days during the monsoon season (June-August). The best time to travel is December to March when the Kaskazi trade wind blows side shore (port tack) Force 3-5 every day. Average year round temperature is a tropical 29 degrees.
